Brandolini’s law tells us something very simple but very real: it takes far more effort to refute nonsense than it does to produce it. That truth is deeply relevant to Maldivian politics today. Too often, public debate is filled with rumours, distortions, and calculated distractions. A false claim can be spread in minutes through speeches, chat groups, or social media. But correcting it takes facts, time, and patience. By then, confusion has already done its work. This is why bad politics so often thrives on noise. It is easier to mislead than to explain. Easier to inflame than to inform. Easier to distract people than to answer serious questions about governance, accountability, decentralisation, and the real concerns of ordinary citizens. In a small and tightly connected country like the Maldives, that danger is even greater. Falsehood spreads fast. Reputations are easily harmed. Communities are stirred. Every day, we make decisions without even realising how many are happening in the background. We judge people in seconds. We react to headlines instantly. We trust some ideas quickly and question others slowly. We assume, predict, decide, and move on. Most of the time, this feels natural. In fact, it feels efficient. I made my choice. I decided to stand with MP Aslam for a record 4th consecutive term in the Parliament. Here is why. I have seen more than 100 years of combined experience conveniently move to the Executive after PE2018. The most senior parliamentarians in the Maldives history, including the current President who served the people of Lhaviyani (and later, Hinnavaru Constituency for 5 consecutive terms). The current Foreign Minister who served as a parliamentarian for 25 years also left the parliament and is a huge loss to legislature. The most senior lady in the chamber also moved to the Administration as the Defense Minister. These are all huge losses to the Parliament. Let's face it. Change is inevitable. For me, the million dollar question is, what are we going to do to make this change beneficial to us. Yes, we demand a truly decentralized government and we want to be able to fully dictate on how we want to shape our city, how we build the economic vitality we all aspire, have full autonomy to decide what kind of humanity we want our children and the future generations of our people to inherit. The President-Elect has often assured the people that one of his first official act as the President of Maldives will be to empower the elected councils. I am hoping he will deliver on that promise shortly after taking the presidential oath. Future-Proofing Addu City: Rethinking Governance in the Age of Disruption As we prepare for the 2020 local elections, the talk in Addu City centers around familiar promises—delivering the ruling party’s presidential manifesto, creating jobs, attracting investment, building "geydhoshu mas" factories, pushing for greater autonomy through decentralization reforms, and expanding community-based tourism. But as I listen to what’s being said, and what isn’t, I’m increasingly convinced that  we’re still trying to solve tomorrow’s problems with yesterday’s tools . While the pledges are important, the political thinking behind them still feels trapped in a past that no longer exists. We live in a deeply interconnected world.
